Bliss and Ignorance

The eclectic array of short films competing in the New Visions category of the Golden Gate Awards—seven of which are included in this rousing program, and four of which are by Bay Area directors—runs the gamut from pleasure (of sight, sensuality and dreams) to pain (from natural disasters, twisted ideologies and bureaucratic nightmares). This challenging program mixes the comfortable and the difficult with an ease that may not always seem so easy.

The Denazification of MH
Local provocateurs Yin-ju Chen and James T. Hong conjure the ominous beauty of the Black Forest while providing a detailed deconstruction of Martin Heidegger’s defense of his Nazi past. (James T. Hong, USA/Germany 2007, 18 min.)

Breath on the Mirror
Exploring the effect of place and culture on dream states, this somnambulant stunner reinterprets the dreams of five residents of Pont-Aven, France. (Vanessa Woods, Sarah Friedland, France/USA 2007, 10 min.)

The General Returns from One Place to Another
This wry bit of beauty refuses to settle for an easily reductive tone. It’s sincere about its insincerity, or so you would think. (Michael Robinson, USA 2006, 11 min.)

Ignorance Before Malice
This ethereal, animated piece delivers one of the most egregious tales of health insurance bureaucracy you will ever hear. (Sandra Davis, USA 2006, 30 min.)

Muse of Cinema
Remove your hats and refrain from unnecessary chitchat. Kerry Laitala presents a thoroughly researched visual and aural collage of cinematic history with her trusty optical printer. (Kerry Laitala, USA 2006, 20 min.)

When We Are Big
A beautifully huge man and a wonderfully tiny girl jump into a pool together. What follows can only be described as unbearable. (Eveline Ketterings, Netherlands 2006, 7 min.)

The Highwater Trilogy
Bill Morrison uses newsreel footage of floods, storms and icebergs to inspire awe and anxiety in today’s meteorologically uncertain times. (Bill Morrison, USA 2006, 31 min.)

Total running time 127 min. All these films are in competition for Golden Gate Awards. Sponsored by Stella Artois. Presented in association with San Francisco Cinematheque.
